ABOUT SeSTA

1. What is SESTA and what is the genesis?

Seven Sisters Development Assistance (SeSTA) is a culmination of efforts to initiate development work to empower communities in remote rural areas of Northeast (NE) India. The NE of India, comprising of eight states, is an ethnically diverse and ecologically fragile area. More than 70% of the population lives in villages yet agriculture and other rural livelihoods are underdeveloped leading to endemic poverty. Development indicators are below the national averages. Given the terrain with accessibility issues, progress has been slow.

Registered in the year 2011 as a society, SeSTA was conceived to put systematic effort for socio-economic development of NE by building capabilities of poor communities, promoting and strengthening their institutions to facilitate them out of poverty and meaningfully participate in the global economy.

2. Where does SESTA work?

SeSTA is one of the largest development agency working in NE India. We work with more than 30,000 rural poor families directly in the states of Assam and Tripura on improved livelihoods, nutrition, improved livestock breeding practices and Natural Resources Management. More than 60 young professionals are working in 457 remote villages of NE India, immersing themselves directly with target communities in 14 districts. They are recruited from universities and hold degrees in subjects like management, engineering, agriculture, and the social sciences. SeSTA works with the communities through 20 field based teams. SeSTA is also the capacity building partners of the State Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM) in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland apart from implementing SRLM projects in Assam and Tripura.

3. Why does SeSTA work with rural women?

SeSTA believes that economic progress and social justice can be achieved only by empowering the most vulnerable in the society. In rural societies, women are the most vulnerable in both economic and social context. SESTA works through women’s community institutions like SHGs and Village Organizations to empower them and they, in turn, become the change agent to drive their families and societies forward.

4. What is SESTA’s mission and vision?

SeSTA’s mission is catalyzing inclusive and sustainable development in North East India by enhancing capabilities of the rural communities.

SeSTA envisages a vibrant, democratic and developed society with peace and harmony where every citizen is empowered and lives a dignified life.

5. Are SESTA’s accounts audited?

SESTA’s accounts are audited half yearly by independent statutory auditors. Annual audited reports are published on the website.
