Turning Mustard Fields into Models of Change
– Purabi Doley
Two dedicated professionals from SeSTA undertook the challenging mission of supporting 750 mustard farmers in three Gram Panchayats: Jorkota, Begenagorah, and Sissimukh—spanning eight villages in Machkhowa Block. Their goal was not just to distribute mustard seeds but also to introduce sustainable agricultural practices to the farmers.

Overcoming Challenges
The day was filled with hurdles. Coordinating logistics, managing a large crowd, and addressing individual concerns required patience and teamwork. Some farmers expressed dissatisfaction, especially regarding the quantity of seeds provided, as they were accustomed to chemical-intensive farming practices that often-promoted higher yields. These moments tested the team’s ability to communicate effectively and build trust.
Spreading Knowledge
To address the farmers’ concerns and promote sustainability, the team conducted quick training sessions on Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM). They introduced organic methods such as Neemastra and explained how reducing chemical inputs could benefit both the land and the farmers’ long-term productivity. Their calm and approachable demeanour gradually shifted resistance into interest.
A Positive Outcome
By the end of the day, mustard seeds were distributed to all eight villages. Many farmers expressed a willingness to try the organic methods they had learned. What began as a challenging task turned into an opportunity to plant the seeds of change—both literally and figuratively.
A Lesson in Perseverance
This experience highlighted the importance of community engagement, clear communication, and persistence. It showed that meaningful change takes time but can be achieved with dedication and understanding. The success of this initiative reaffirmed SeSTA’s commitment to empowering farmers and promoting sustainable practices for a better future.
