Echoes of Arengdo: A Symphony of Ginger, Grit, and Growth

The Green Hills Producer Group is a collective of 12 women from the village of Arengdo in Meghalaya. Formed on March 3, 2022, this group focuses on ginger production. They are also part of a Self Help Group (SHG) under the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS). Their dedication to multiple agricultural activities sets them apart as a versatile and resilient group. The Green Hills Producer Group received 40,000 rupees as a support fund from the FOCUS project. This financial assistance was crucial in helping them enhance their agricultural practices. The support enabled them to invest in better seeds, tools, and other necessary resources for their farming activities.

While ginger is their primary product, the group engages in various other agricultural activities. They rear pigs and grow areca nuts, spices, maize, and pumpkins. This diversification helps them maintain a steady income throughout the year and reduces their dependence on a single crop. The diverse agricultural practices also contribute to food security for their families and communities.

 

Ginger Production and Sales

Last year, the Green Hills Producer Group produced an impressive 11 tons of ginger. Out of this, they sold 9 tons at 120 rupees per kilogram, earning a significant income. This success not only boosted their financial stability but also reinforced their reputation as efficient and effective farmers. The remaining 3 tons of ginger were kept for planting this year, ensuring continuity in their production cycle.

Current Activities and Future Plans

The group has already planted the 3 tons of ginger saved from the previous year in their fields for this year’s harvest. They continue to be actively involved in their various agricultural practices, which provide them with multiple sources of income and ensure the sustainability of their livelihoods. With the ongoing support from the FOCUS project and their hard work, the Green Hills Producer. The group plans to expand their activities. They aim to increase their ginger production and explore new markets for their products. Additionally, they are looking into improving their farming techniques and adopting more sustainable practices to enhance productivity and ensure long-term success.

Challenges and Resilience

The journey of the Green Hills Producer Group has not been without challenges. They have faced issues such as diseases affecting crops, fluctuating market prices, and the need for continuous investment in farming equipment and inputs. However, their resilience and adaptability have enabled them to overcome these obstacles. The support from the FOCUS project has been instrumental in helping them navigate these challenges. The financial assistance and training provided have equipped them with the necessary skills and resources to tackle difficulties and continue thriving.
